This Year's Model Updates:

Only minor changes are made to Chevrolet's bread-and-butter Silverado pickup for 2002. Some options packages have been revamped for easier ordering and all extended-cab models now come standard with a four-speed automatic transmission, with the manual no longer available.

Pros:
  • Roomy extended cab models, strong V8 engines, available composite bed, disc brakes at all four corners, optional traction control.
Cons:
  • Cheap interior materials, sketchy build quality.

  • Best Buy Pickup - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

This is a smooth riding, but capable work truck. I have hauled firewood to building materials and everything in between. It beats any other pickup in its class for fuel mileage, yet has enough power to get things done. I think GMs quality has improved a lot over the last ten years. I love the layout of the cab, and the special features. The 4.3 V6 has decent power- low end torque, cruises at the high teens of rpm at 65 mph. It handles well and brakes good. When I trade in my SUV I plan on buying a Tahoe, I hope before they restyle it. While I like the current Chevy over Ford or Dodge , I like the style of the 2002s better.

  • Love this truck!!! - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Looks great and lives up to the look. Feels like Im driving a Vet with a truck bed on it. Love the power and handling. Smoothest ride Ive ever had from ANY truck, and MOST cars. A/C and stereo controls are easy and efficient. The layout makes for quick adjustment without distracting from the road. Get compliments on it everywhere I go. Got two compliments on the truck in the last three days. Am very satisfied with my purchase!!!

What a long way chevy full size pickups have came since the 95 I had. This vehicle is pure pleasure to drive. The power of the 4.8 V8 and the new stiffness of the body structure is pure beauty. The truck is as quiet inside as a limo and the truck is solid. LIKE A ROCK! Chevys auto transmission is second to none. This transmission adapted wonderfully to my driving habits. Thank Chevrolet for putting the beauty under the skin instead of the fad styling of the other trucks. This truck draws attention only to those who really love trucks. The 2002 will be a classic.

  • Switched to Extended Cab - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

No problems. I do mostly city driving and get about the same gas mileage with the the big v8 as I did with the small v6. I switched from the regular cab to extended to get more space, and got the v8 because the v6 just didnt feel right. Ive only had 2 issues with the truck. 1. Its too long. It doesnt fit in my garage. 2. It doesnt turn sharp enough, but Chevy sells an option to fix that problem.

  • Good - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

All of the obvious plastic on the inside of the truck make the interior look cheap. You can hear plastic bits rubbing together when you roll down the road, especially coming from the extend cab area. The declo CD/tape deck that came with this LT trimmed truck are pure junk. The only upside were the big easy to read buttons. The only better looking truck is on the road is the GMC Denali. The four wheel steering option must be nice. The turning radious on the extended cab is pretty wide Gas mileage is good in the 4.8 liter, and the ride is comfortable. Overall, this is a great truck.

  • Good Truck - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I purchased this truck used with 15,000 miles on it, I now have 45,000 on it 2 years later. I have had no problems with the truck mechanicaly. I tow a ski boat reguarly and fuel economy is only slightly effected. Only problems I have include, the leather seats cracking prematurly, and the dash has a few spots that are chipping. I get better than avertised with fuel economy, i get about 17 mpg city and 20 hwy with the 5.3L V-8. However, I do drive with a light foot and I have a bed cover on the truck. My father has a 2005 4wd Ford F-150 with an idetical bed cover and he gets better gas milage that that, however the chevy seems to handle towing better and is more manuverable.

  • power steering troubles - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I have a 2002 1500 4x4 ext cab with about 140000 miles in it the problem is with steering with about 75000 miles the power steering pump broke put a new one on it and worked fine but about 10000 to 10010 miles the pump started making a lot of noise a it would lock up when turning then it started pulling to the left the front end is still in good alignment no tire wear if you are seating still a let go of steering wheel it will turn to the left by itself .I have put a new gear box in that did not help so I put a new pump on it still pulls to the left and is hard to steer. Does any one have same problem or know what to do to fix this besides selling it 7-9-16 Iput a new gear box on it and a new pump the streering is a little tite buts works better I think it might have been the way the front end was sietting to low I rased it it feels better now

  • Silverado V6 Short Bed - Purchased 11/01 - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Great new features. I purchased the V6 instead of the V8 due to fuel economy. The V6 has power and does not jolt when using Octane 92-94 during fast accelleration. The manual recommends 87 octanes. I have had a little jolt in the transmission when rapid accellaration with 87 octane. The body has double side galvanized steel so you dont have to worry about nicks and rust. Overall, I feel my Silverado was a great buy that will hold its value for years when compared to other manufactuers - QUALITY and RELIABLE.

  • Last chevy - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

This truck was trouble free until the transmission gave out. Traded it in three days later, new tranny and all since I refuse to own a vehicle that requires major work with only 51,000 easy miles. I also found the handling kind of loose although that may be typical of this large a vehicle. Otherwise the truck did well.

  • Nice truck but watch for flaws - 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I have the 4.8L version of the Silverado. This model suits my needs just fine since I dont tow or haul on a regular basis. I currently have about 39K miles as of 10/04. The interior of the truck is nicely put together. The seats are comfortable and there is plenty of leg and head room. The stock Goodyear Wrangler STs are sub-par to say the least. They were bald at 33K miles. I have had no major issues with the truck other than a constant "ticking" noise which started at approximately 20K miles. I was told by GM and my dealership that it is a common characteristic of their new breed of engines and that there is no harm to the engine itself. Im not so sure of that. . .
